About Film Annex talks to Schoolly D, the First Gangsta Rapper
At the latest edition of Q Department's Director's Series, featuring Abel Ferrara, we had the chance to speak with the Philadelphia-based rapper Schoolly D. Amicable, amusing, and super interesting, Schoolly D talked about his first encounter with Ferrara and their multiple collaborations that followed. The two worked on many films together, including Bad Lieutenant and the King of New York. "Abel met me before I met him," Schoolly tells us as he talks about Ferrara's love for music and its significance in his movies. A musician that has been influencing and inspiring for the past 27 years, he is known to be the first gangsta rapper, according to Ice-T and many others.
